Well, no but let me start from the beginning and tell you how I came to think of this …
🤩 My 15 year old daughter wants to train at a gym with a friend. And while I would be happier if she swung a mace with me, I totally respect her wishes. However, I want her to be safe and teach her good form, so I have been going to the gym with her and hr friend to help them learn.
🏋️♀️ It brought back lots of memories from when I used to work at gyms a s a trainer. A stark difference to what I do now and how I train my body.
The most glaring things I noticed:
👉 The level of distraction
Loud music, bright lights and tv screens. It gives people no space to tune into their bodies, focus on breath and reconnect.
👉 People
There were people everywhere and you have to constantly watch out so you don’t get into someone’s way.
👉 The machines
Observing how people train such a limited range and isolated muscle groups made me sad. This is not how the human body moves.
🥰 Things that surprised me and made me happy
The amount of teen boys working out, there were so many - in groups, pairs or alone.
This truly warmed my heart to see so many young people working out regularly and improving their physical and mental strength.
My son is 18 and goes to the gym with friends most days and I love it. He often tells me that he goes because it makes him feel good, mentally and emotionally not just physically.
Knowing that New Zealand has the highest teen boy suicide rate in the OECD, it brings me peace that he knows how to make himself feel happy.
🤔 So do I miss the weights and the barbells.
NO!
☀️ I get to swing mace in my garden with the sunrise and birds for company. No people, just me, nature, my breath and my body.
😂 But as you can see, I had to do a set of deadlifts and chest presses to impress the teen girls.
I want them to know that even at 47 years, you can be wickedly strong and fit.
